Bulk vs packaged nuts: the differences
For retail points: the strengths of bulk and packaged nuts, what each requires, and tips for striking the right balance.

For any supermarket, delicatessen or nut shop, one of the most basic questions is whether to sell nuts loose or packaged. Most retail points use both, but knowing the strengths and weaknesses of each makes it easier to decide which product to offer in which form. Because Altıntop supplies both bulk and packaged products, we hear this question from retailers often.
Bulk nuts: see it, buy as much as you like
The biggest advantage of loose sale is that customers can see the product and buy exactly the amount they want. A colourful nut counter catches the eye as soon as someone walks into the shop, and the smell of freshly roasted nuts helps sales too. Customers can buy a small amount to try something new, or as much as they like of their favourites.
On the other hand, selling in bulk asks more of the retailer:
- Hygiene: products should be kept in lidded display containers and served with a scoop or tongs.
- Freshness: nuts on an open counter are more exposed to air and moisture. Containers should be filled with small quantities and topped up often.
- Stock control: because products are sold by weight, waste and stock need to be tracked more carefully.
Our bulk range includes sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, pistachios, almonds, hazelnuts, cashews, salted and in-shell peanuts, several kinds of roasted chickpeas, sugar-coated chickpeas, chips and sesame peanuts, and seasoned corn.
Packaged nuts: protected freshness, easy to sell
Packaged products keep their freshness on the shelf for longer, thanks to packaging that is sealed shortly after roasting. Every pack has the same weight, which makes pricing and stock control simple, with no need for scales at the till. Information such as the brand, contents and best-before date is printed on the pack, so customers can see exactly what they are buying.
Packaged products also suit a wider range of settings: checkout stands, kiosks, petrol station shops and small retail points without space for a bulk counter.

Which is right for you?
The right answer is often a balanced mix of both. Popular, fast-moving products create a lively display on a bulk counter, while slower sellers or products whose freshness is more delicate can be offered packaged. Taking your customer profile, counter space and stock turnover into account will help you find the most efficient layout.
